What is the Holistic Approach?

When considering the way we view an ailment or an injury, there is a natural reaction to want to ‘blame’ or find something responsible for bringing us this problem. Blame is a common and negative reaction to feeling ill, or being injured. Accidents have to have a ‘cause’. Illness has to have an ‘origin’. That’s what we’ve been told to believe, and I know scientifically, we can see the biological processes behind a viral infection or a disease of the body. Accidents and injuries are also assessed in a similar manner, with blame being apportioned to a process or object that has ‘caused’ the injury.

This all seems so matter of fact, but to think radically, we could also look at the overall message of the injury or sickness. What is it trying to tell us? What could be the positive benefits of exploring our body’s messages?

A Holistic Therapist will start by asking you for a background to the event, or issue. This may take you back farther than you think. (you may end up pinpointing a time in childhood where a certain issue began) Sometimes it is just that an event had a ‘gestation’ of smaller incidents leading up to it, and in hindsight, one can see the steps that are being taken to alert you to a certain issue. Gently at first and then steadily increasing in ‘dosage’ until a major event occurs that puts a stop to all ‘things’ until the issue is addressed and acknowledged. If the issue is not acknowledged we see that the Life Experience of this is often replicated again and again….which can be frustrating for you and whoever is trying to assist your recovery.

There are several self help books describing how to ‘listen’ to your body, how to decipher your experiences to see what the message is. Perhaps next time you have an ‘event’ of injury or illness you can begin by looking into the issue, and find the message that can lead to real healing. Viewing yourself and your experiences in a Holistic manner, where all parts of your existence are connected, can be very enlightening, and challenging and often confronting. It IS easier to pop a pill once or twice, but is it really ‘easier’ when you then confront the side effects of those pills? Wouldn’t it be great to get rid of the issue once and for all and never have to deal with it again.

If you would like to talk to me about having a 15minute complimentary e-chat or phonecall to assess an issue or situation you feel may be helped by the Holistic approach, please call or email me direct.
Many Blessings from Jannette, Holistic Therapist
