MiTour of the Miessence factory

Last Saturday I had the pleasure of gathering with the rest of the Miessence Family (Brisbane) to enjoy a meeting with Narelle Chenery at the Miessence factory in Nerang on the Gold Coast. I took along my 11year old daughter as part of her home-ed 'excursion' set, and well, she was kinda dying to go with me and see where all these marvelous smelling products I get come from. When we pulled up outside the building she remarked that she envisaged that it would be a bigger place. I replied that sometimes its quality not quantity that is important, and we found out that afternoon that this is also a philosophy of Miessence's manufacturing processes. We met up with my wonderful support 'parents' Sarah Lantz and Jason Calender, along with the rest of the gang.

Firstly, it was lovely to meet Narelle who walked around and mingled with the group, introducing herself to new people and enjoying catch ups with others. She's a gem; a natural person, and very easy to speak with. Secondly we were treated to her 'journey' thus far, which began with an early diagnosis of 'pre-cancerous cells', something that prompted a dramatic change in her life and encouraged her towards an organic and natural lifestyle. We were taken through the highs and lows of moving state and beginning a new family, the confrontation of finding that the products she was selling were not as 'natural' as she had been led to believe, starting her own home-based skincare business, organising fabulously successful events only to see her own product not sell, and then the challenges of finding compatibly organic ingredients so that her next venture (aided by Alf Orpen, one of the partners of Miessence) became the world's first Certified Organic Skin Care and Make-up range. A world first! What an achievement, and what an inspirational story too.

On the factory tour we were taken through the two warehouse 'rooms' one with bulk ingredients and packaging etc...a high tech water filtration unit that has only brought one contamination reading back in over 2yrs (all Miessence products containing any water contain water that is super pure!), a cool room for mixing the raw ingredients (all ingredients remain 'raw'...ie: not heated over 40C) and the hand mixing, hand pouring, hand filling and hand labelling tables with their various little contraptions to make all this 'hand work' easier for the 30 staff who are employed. Now that in itself was sort of amazing...only 30 staff to run a worldwide business? How do they manage that?

Well, that was the second 'wow' thing that pipped my interest. Miessence makes its products on a one or two month rota, based on a sales limit that triggers a 'ready to make more stock' alert. Everything is really 'fresh'! So there is no conveyer belt manufacturing here. Its all 'as required' by ordering status. No excessive output = minimal to no waste. The packaging filler is compost friendly (my worm farm loves it actually...), the warehouse uses electric forklifts, so all you smell is the gorgeous ingredients. The place, as far as factories go, was very tidy, clean and had great feng shui if you ask me! :)

My daughter has her video of the tour to go over and make into a project about conscious manufacturing practices and organic business for her annual report. I had a great afternoon and learned a lot about the processes and procedures in place to make a world class product with organic certification, and, I so appreciated meeting this woman with so much determination and vision. Narelle is passionate about the products, the lifestyle it promotes, and her enthusiasm is contagious, vivacious and full of integrity. What a great way to spend a few hours :)

Tuning into Love 030 - Holistic Therapies WORK! *for* you

A stressful few days have just passed. My father has been hospitalised after weeks of immobility and underwent surgery last night. The evening before he was in Emergency, and my son was battling a night of a particularly severe hayfever attack. Last night as my thoughts were with my Dad having a double operation, my youngest daughter began to purge...all night. So that's two nights of no sleep.

How am I getting through this?

Firstly I know its because I have good support, and that I know when to stop, take a moment to contemplate, and retrieve a semblance of perspective to re-align and move back to a balance point. Without this 'learned behaviour' I don't think I'd have such clarity right now.

The other things are:
Bach Flowers Rescue Remedy (as often as I could, whenever, wherever)
Calm Me Aromatherapy Blend (on the wrists and temple pulse points....bliss)
Deep Green alkaliser and In-Liven superfood probiotic (stress heavily depletes the body of vital nutrients and an appetite too...these have been my 'food' for the last few days)
Meditation
Barefoot walking on the grass
Hugging my children and my partner

There's been moments of overwhelm, the tears have flowed and the Mind has traveled to places that aren't pleasant, but I've come back. I trust that we 'know' when things aren't right, and through all of this turmoil I know that I'm doing all the right things, that I am Divinely Loved and that all I need do is ask for assistance and it is given. So I've asked, and thanked, and loved and adored my Divine guides and helpers and all things are working out Perfectly.

My dear ol' Dad a few months ago with my youngest daughter...trustingly asleep in strong arms :)
My son is responding to all the natural remedy treatments we are currently 'doing', and is blissfully sleeping through his immune system strengthening. He'll take a few days to kick this but I know he'll conquer it. My daughter woke up this morning and was bright as a button, temperature gone, and asking for food. In both cases it did not occur to me they would need a doctor, because I know that the care I am attending them with is exactly the kind of care they would experience under 'medical attention'. The key here is focused attention. Trust and Action together ;) yah?

I'm now looking forward to helping my Dad in recovery and rehabilitation from his operation and the weeks he has spent being immobile. This I too trust will work through in Perfect Timing for him and for us too.

Bright Blessings for Beautiful Awareness

Apricot Coconut Bliss Balls

Its been a while since I refined one of my bliss ball recipes, but since I have been out and about with the new Home-Ed group doing 'park days' for around 10months now, I've found these little packets of energy just so, so useful to have in the picnic hamper. Especially when my 3year old has been taken with wanderlust a lot more, which leaves me not having lunch on the picnic blankets with other Mums, but out and about, here and there, following my little explorer with a handful of edible things to munch along the way.

This is a quick recipe, pretty fail-safe, dairy free and if you leave out the Raw Wheatgerm its also gluten free. Just a note on the ingredients; I always use foods that are as natural as possible, so that means, no GMO stuff, predominantly Certified Organic, and if I use dried fruits I obtain the kind that do not contain sulphites or preservatives. To me, there's no point in 'doing health food' if its not really, truly, healthy...

First up, the ingredients list:
200g Dried Apricots
Handful Dried Goji Berries
Handful Sultanas
12 Pitted Prunes
30ml Flaxseed Oil (cold-pressed, virgin)

5tblspns Fine Coconut
2tblspns Raw Wheatgerm (replace with Coconut or Chia Seeds if you want to have gluten free bliss balls)
2tblspns Dulse Flakes
2tblspns Chia Seeds
2tblspns Quinoa Grain

Handful Walnuts
Handful Almonds
One half or 3/4 of a Vanilla Pod

The method is to generally get the dried goods chopped up, the nuts whizzed in a food processor, then to add 'the other bits'...this is how I did it...

  1. Chop up the Vanilla Pod, Apricots, Sultanas, Goji Berries and Pitted Prunes and whizz them in the food processor for around a minute to get the Apricots finely chopped up. Tip that lot into a mixing bowl.
  2. Put the Nuts, Coconut, Raw Wheatgerm, Quinoa and Chia into the food processor and chop up till fine but slightly chunky here and there. 'Rubble' texture.
  3. Add the dried fruits mix back into the food processor along with the Flaxseed Oil, a little at a time. Blend until the mixture comes together in a blob.
  4. Remove from the food processor into the mixing bowl and give it a bit of a turn over with a tablespoon so that you are satisfied the ingredients are well mixed up.

Then its a case of rolling small portions into balls, and then rolling them in some more coconut so they don't stick together. Tub up and keep cool or refrigerate. These last for a day in a 'pack up' and make a tasty and super-nutritious snack. Refrigerate for a few weeks...but they'll be eaten before then anyway.

Enjoy! :)
Blessings

ABC Superfood Balls

Ingredients

1/2 cup Raw Almonds

1/4 cup Raw Brazil Nuts

1/2 cup Raw Cashews

1 cup dried Apricots

1&1/2 tablespoons Coconut Oil (cold pressed extra virgin)

1 teaspoon ground Cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground Nutmeg

Method

· In a 1.5 or 1.8L processor bowl, place the raw nuts and pulse to break them up. Take a handful or two aside to use to roll the balls in and prevent the finished balls from sticking together.

· Process the nuts until they are a rough ‘meal’ consistency...like rustic wholemeal flour.

· Chop up the dried apricots and add them to the bowl.

· Pulse to break them up and mix them through.

· Process the mixture until the apricots are in small pieces/chunks about the size of small raisins.

· Add the dried spices and mix together.

· Add the coconut oil and mix on medium to blend the ingredients well.

· Test the mixture so that it stays together when you pinch it. (if you need to add a little more coconut oil do so in half teaspoon increments until you reach a good consistency)

· Using a teaspoon, scoop out a small amount of mixture and roll it into a ball, then roll it in some of the nut meal. Continue until the mixture is all rolled into balls and coated in nut meal.

· Place in a jar or container in the fridge so they can solidify.

These are delicious with
chai tea or dandelion root drink, and a good way of getting an instant energy boost without consuming sugar.

You could add some raw cacao, or Berry Radical powder to this mixture and make it ‘chocolatey’, or substitute the nut meal coating with Quinoa or Amaranth flakes to give it extra protein. The nut and dried fruit mix is full of vitamins and minerals to support you when you need that extra bit of help to get through the day. And, this is all processed sugar free. Great hey :)

Super Bliss Balls!

Here's a special blog for Vicki :) Thanks for prompting me to get these recipes up on the Blog! :) Cheers!!

Super Bliss Balls

(Vegan and V yummy too)

Ingredients (certified organic wherever possible)

· 5 large Medjool Dates or 5 to 6 large semi dried Prunes

· Half a teaspoon each of ground Nutmeg and Cinnamon

· One Tablespoon Raw Honey or Coconut Oil

· One Tablespoon Chia Seed

· One Tablespoon Raw Cacao powder (or use Berry Radical Superfood Antioxidant powder)

· Half a teaspoon of Spirulina (or Chlorella) powder (or use In-Liven Superfood powder)

· Half a cup of raw Cashews

· Quarter of a cup of raw Almonds

· Small handful of Walnuts

(you may of course choose to use a different combination of premium quality nuts, but avoid peanuts)

You will also need a half cup of Sesame Seeds, Quinoa Flakes, Coconut Flakes or crushed nuts for the coating

Method

· Pit the dates

· Add all the ingredients into a 1.8L or 1.5L food processor bowl

· Pulse to mix the ingredients and break up any big nuts

· Blend for about 30seconds to a workable consistency ie: so you can pinch the mixture together and it holds shape...you may want to add another half teaspoon of honey, coconut oil or apple juice, if it needs it.

· Turn off the processor at the wall and remove the blade

· Using a teaspoon, scoop out small amounts of the mixture and roll them on the palms of your hands to form small balls

· Place them onto a plate with the Sesame Seeds

· Once you have rolled the mixture into balls, gently roll them on the Sesame Seeds to coat them, and put into a container to keep in the fridge.

These are powerpacked little bombs of nutrition! Take one or two for a quick midmorning/midafternoon energy boooooooooost, or, as a pack when hiking or walking. I find that even my small child can handle eating these as the nuts are already crushed up a fair bit.
Try using a little dusting of raw cacao to coat the bliss balls for a bitter-sweet hit…
now...wouldn’t that go well with some organic chai...

Energy Boosting Tips for you NOW

Are you the kind of person who would like or need more energy?
Aren't we all?!
Even if you are fit and healthy, you can have periods in your life where you may be challenged to complete tasks or overcome some kind of adversity. These kinds of stresses can impact upon your energy systems. Your immune system, your aura, or energy field, your mental energy and your emotional enthusiasm for the task at hand can all be compromised without proper support.

Physical energy can be assisted by eating superfoods, raw foods, and making sure you are getting a good amount of antioxidants to help your body detox naturally. We all have to put up with environmental pollution, some more than others, and your immune system will respond to pollutants by revving up to get rid of any extra toxins in the body.

You can boost your antioxidant and nutrition intake by having a supplement drink like Berry Radical, InLiven or FastTract. These drink powders offer a variety of beneficial ingredients and you will notice the difference very swiftly after ingesting them :) That's because they are FOOD and ingested as a liquid, so your body uses very little energy to convert them to ... energy!

And, because they are certified organic to the highest standards, you know you aren't having to waste any of your precious bodily energy detoxing traces of pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers and other common pollutants found in non-certified organic products.

For all the information on the supplement drinks listed here, go to www.JannetteTibbs.miessence.com and have a look around  :)

Many Blessings for GREAT Health

Cinnamon - Healing with Comfort & Warmth

Cinnamon has been used for hundreds of years to assist with conditions that are brought by cold weather. Its natural effects of warming and calming assist with making us feel comforted, soothed and generally 'looked after'. The antiviral properties of Cinnamon are extremely useful during the 'change of season' from warm to cool and cool to warm, (that is, Autumn and Spring) but beneficial anytime for its other uses such as a digestive stimulant, or by topical application for insect stings.

It has to be amongst one of the easiest healing spices to obtain by either sourcing the bark shavings as 'quills', or the ground Cinnamon we are all probably familiar with from baking. Adding ground Cinnamon to your coffee or tea will make you feel good if you have been out in cold weather or if you've had a traumatic situation. Often the shock of extreme weather conditions or unfavourable behaviour, and sometimes even 'bad news' can affect our immune system, and this shock if not treated with a restorative therapy can bring on illness. Cinnamon is antiviral and antibacterial, as well as calming yet stimulating...so it can address shock, fright or trauma and assist with re-balancing the physical and emotional bodies. It is excellent for use with children who are feeling nauseated and / or nervous. A small shake of ground Cinnamon into a warm oatmilk (or cows milk) will help them feel better quickly.

Cinnamon Essential Oil is volatile, and will burn skin if applied directly without dilution. Using a blend of Cinnamon with Ginger in a small amount of carrier oil (Avocado, Sweet Almond, Cottonseed, Wheatgerm) will enable it to be used as a gentle massage oil for cold feet & hands, or on the back to stimulate blood flow to these areas. When used like this it can help to move congestion in the lungs, or help soothe arthritic symptoms. A simple blend to use is 15ml carrier oil with 3 drops *Cinnamon Essential Oil, and 2 drops Ginger Essential Oil. (caution: do not rub vigorously! *only gentle sweeping motions with the hands and only massage for about 30 seconds, then cover the area with a light cloth or light clothing to keep warm)
To treat someone for overt shock, or trauma from cold, run a deep lukewarm bath and add 5 drops of Cinnamon Oil and 10 drops of Rescue Remedy. Allow them to soak for around 5minutes and then assist them into light clothing and a comfortable bed.  Administer Rescue Remedy again under the tongue or in a cup of water.

Cinnamon is one of the ingredients in Chai Tea and also an ingredient in the Vital Spice Energy Mist from HolisticTherapyConnections.com.

Are you aiming for a good Weight or good Nutrition?

My totally organic vege and herb tub growing abundantly :)

Recently I've been taking a superfood called Spirulina, and noticing some amazing changes in my body, my health, and because of this I've told a few people about how good I feel, and how I've lost weight without really 'trying' to. It has produced a few reactions from people, and from me too.

Firstly, everyone has been wanting to know 'how I'm doing it'. "How can I lose weight easily!?" Seems to be the most asked question out! But the answer is completely simple. Stop filling up your body (and your cells) with foods that clog you up, that sit around, and don't work for you.

The second thing that has happened is that a lot of people are wanting to tell me about the greatest new diet thing, regime, supplement, shake...whatever,...that they've tried, just bought, or signed up for. They need to see if I think that it stacks up against what I am doing, or if I think its 'valid'.

This produces a third reaction, and its my personal one, of being completely mystified how you could want to spend money on a 'program' to do what you are doing every day. Eating. YOU have to eat. YOU have to choose what you put in your mouth. So why on earth would YOU pay someone else to tell you what you already know? There's certainly enough free information out there to read about what is good food for you, so why are you tuning into some slick marketing and being talked into spending your $$? Beats me...?!

I want anyone who is thinking, considering, or questioning their diet regime to ask the most obvious and important question.
"Is the nutritional value of the food I am consuming, as high as it can possibly be?"
If your food contains additives, preservatives, trace chemicals left over from production, or an excessive amount of sugar, processed flours etc...then you are NOT consuming the highest quality nutrients, and in the end, your health will not be optimum. You'll crave more nutrients, and it will send you in the way of eating something to get more energy...

Spirulina is a superfood that has the added benefit of giving you the feeling that you are 'satisfied' nutritionally, and this helps your brain disconnect from the 'craving' sensation. Reducing sugar intake, and fat intake at the same time is healthy, and helps to get the most out of eating Spirulina. So what IS Spirulina? Its an algae (yeah, I know, not the easiest thing to market hey?) that is super high in all the nutrients, trace elements and minerals we need to survive.

As it is a food already, your body doesn't have to 'break it down' or liquify it, so it gets absorbed immediately by all your cells, and your body feels nourished straight away. If you take Spirulina as a tablet or a powder in some juice about an hour before eating, it helps to control overeaters from continuing on that kind of destructive ingestion. And it helps people with any dietary intake to feel that they only need enough to fill their stomach, and no more. It helps to stop overeating...simply put.

I find that having Spirulina before breakfast helps me completely knock out my usual morning tea cravings. In fact I don't have morning tea anymore. I just have a cup of tea.

I find that I can have some salad wraps for lunch and don't feel hungry until about 5pm or 6pm, when I have another light meal. If I get hungry at night, I snack on a handful of walnuts or similar. I haven't had time to access more than a few walks a week. I don't belong to a gym, and I haven't been able to buy a super expensive bicycle or the most up to the minute running shoes either....I've just added Spirulina to my diet and removed the excess sugar, flour and synthetics.

If you'd like to try some Spirulina, I'll be happy to supply some at a 10% discount on all orders over $100. It will be on my website soon, but for now you can view prices and sizes on the website at Synergy Natural.

Good nutrition is always going to give you Good Health. Preservatives and additives and non-organic produce is always going to bring unbeneficial 'residues' to your body, and in time, your Life.
You choose.

Skin Issues? Could be that your 'gut feeling' about what is going wrong, is actually right!

Having a healthy digestive system is imperative to overall good health. One can't happen without the other.

Today's modern medical interventions, like the prescription of antibiotics for minor viral infections, lead to a wholesale slaughter of 'good bacteria' as well as the nasty ones. This imbalance is where a cycle of ill-health begins, and many people will have a history of sensitive skin, allergies and irritated skin conditions from taking a course of antibiotics.

A'clogged' digestive system can't work properly because the symbiotic bacteria aren't at high enough levels, and so all our organs go into overload, and the biggest organ is the skin. It literally takes on the processing of toxins for the rest of the organs. Everyone metabolises slightly differently, and for some of us, the skin is where a lot of the toxins come out.

How do you redress the balance simply? Easy.
Use a safe and effective probiotic while, and for a time after, your antibiotic prescription. (or better still, don't accept the antibiotics and boost up on some natural antiviral superfoods like Garlic, Thyme and Rosemary. Eating things like Am
aranth, Chia and Quinoa also really help your immune system!)

To restore vital good bacteria that preserve the delicate and necessary balance required for adequate digestion and absorption of nutrients, take a probiotic drink like Kefir, or try something like 'Fastract' from Miessence. (Fastract is a gluten free probiotic drink available from your ONEGroup Rep) Miessence also have a superfood + probiotic powder called In-Liven that is my personal favourite. I actually mix In-Liven with my Kefir milk each day to promote intensive internal healing' restore balance, and support the immune system.

Cacao Power, the Mayan Superfood! August Giveaway Competition!

REAL Cacao, the Mayan Superfood for good health.

PowerSuperFoods has been generous enough to supply me with a few samples of their products. And now, I’m passing on the opportunity to you to try some of their 100% certified organic, vegan, fair-trade, raw and gluten free cacao powder.

There are three sample packs of Cacao Power powder to be won.

The website has some suggestions for recipes and usages. I’ve been using this product instead of sickly chocolate ‘drink’ powders, and find that my children prefer this too! They love it in their smoothies, as a ‘hot chocolate’ or as a cold milk chocolate drink using soymilk. High in magnesium and natural antioxidants, a hot drink of this is what you replace your morning coffee and tea with!

Simply email me with the subject heading ‘Raw Cacao’ and you’re in the running for one of those samples! Good Luck!

Healthy - what you need to know now

Not so long ago it was common practice to get antibiotics to treat any kind of viral infection, like the flu, until recent studies showed that they were more than useless against such an infection, even that they actually helped keep the patient sick or promoted the length of illness. So why were they used like a panacea for viruses for so long?

Perhaps it was just a quick fix for our modern society where things need to be ‘addressed’ and ‘attended to’ with prompt and decisive actions...or it may have been a knee jerk reaction to the lowering immune systems within our modern society, and to administer a ‘wonder drug’ like an antibiotic and see the patients symptoms reduce within hours was a good enough reason to prolong their use.

Then there are the vaccines, hailed as miracle drugs capable of saving whole populations. And it seems that from a distance that the cases of Polio, Measles and the like have almost disappeared...that is until you research a little and have a look at ‘how’ epidemics are medically described, ‘how’ a disease is classified, and what parameters are used in ‘diagnosis’ of whether a person has a disease like Polio or something similar. The parameters are very elastic it seems...but its up to you whether you choose to delve deeper than the media release or not. Usually the case is that epidemics occur because of poor nutrition and sanitation, the lack of clean water and the general breakdown of healthy living conditions.

Whatever we believe about modern medicine, it is common knowledge that synthetic pharmaceuticals carry with them side effects that may or may not manifest in the person who is taking them. The very individuality of humans is one reason why these side effects are not taken, by the majority of the population, as seriously they should be. The vast majority of people believe or assume that the drugs available and prescribed to them have undergone testing and been found useful, effective and not harmful to humans. The truth is quite shocking once you start to research just what modern pharmaceuticals are made from, the ingredients, and what they can ‘potentially’ cause as far as side effects are concerned.

Enter now the situation of a media hyped ‘swine flu epidemic’ and the announcement that vaccines will be available en-mass very soon. Personally I am nervous and concerned about this newest flu scare and the reaction by governments to buy up large amounts of untested and rushed production vaccines. Getting Swine Flu may be a bit scary of course, but being injected with (or having your children or elderly relatives injected with) untested vaccines made using animal cells and adjuvants (used to speed up the effectiveness of the active ingredients) is downright horrifying. Its like something out of a thriller movie…to find out more you can read this article ‘Ten Things You’re Not Supposed To Know About The Swine Flu Vaccine’ at Natural News. Its an eye-opener.

At the first sign of symptoms like a runny nose, headache, sweats and or fever, most people get angry or worried or scared, perhaps all three,...but these symptoms are all completely natural and are signs that your immune system is responding !

What these symptoms indicate is that a body is crying out for nutrition, detoxification, recuperation and real healing. What most people don’t realise is that to ‘fix’ all this, you need to feed the immune system. The human body is made to fight infections, overcome bacterial attacks, and restore itself. The way it does this is through the immune system and without a strong one we will find that we do become sick, we become stressed, we ‘fall down’.

The secret I want to share and shout about is that good health starts with a mindset. “I am well”. That’s not to say your mantra is all about lying to yourself while your nose is red, your head pounding and your throat is on fire.
No, it means that “I am well” is your goal.

“I am well” begins by releasing phrases like “oh, I’m coming down with a Cold’ or, ‘yeah, I think it’s the flu bug that’s caught me….’. These are ways of reinforcing your perceived incapability to do anything about your state of being. “I am well” is a goal to attain, and it begins with phrases like, ‘yep, I’m a bit snuffly, I’m fighting off a Cold’, or ‘yep! I’m only going to get better by resting’. Simple, stupidly simple, but amazingly effective.

The other thing that you can do is have a good intake of ‘superfoods’ that support your positive mindset by reinforcing that vibrational healing in the physical plane. Superfoods can be anything from powerful herbs like Garlic, Ginger, Thyme, Rosemary etc, ..to other more exotic things like raw Cacao, raw Coffee bean, Amaranth, Quinoa, Goji berry, or Acai. Even the regal Blueberry can do wonders for an ailing body! You might also choose to go for a ‘green powder’ superfood like Spirulina, Chlorella or similar. Green IS the way to go when thinking of detoxing and nurturing the human body. All of these mentioned above are potent detoxifying agents too. They support natural detoxification systems and boost the immunity of the human body.

Then there is the need for supplying healthy bacteria that has been lost to modern society by the use of Pasteurization and the declining need for fermented and preserved foods. These kinds of foods are high in beneficial bacteria (probiotics) that we need to keep a balanced digestive system. You can get these from Kefir (a kind of grain I’ve written about before, just email me for the article) or from another probiotic drink (just watch out for the sugar laden versions that are quite useless) or even in a capsule form. Many skin conditions, digestive complaints and even headaches, can be related to inadequate bacterial balance in the digestive tract. Re-balancing this can bring about dramatic results...just ask me. (twenty years of struggling with a skin condition only to have it soothed and cured by using Probiotics!)

To encourage you to get healthy for good, I’d like to extend an amazing offer to try out a powerful Antioxidant and a potent Probiotic product by MiVitality. These are certified organic and I have tried and tested them myself, and can with integrity vouch for their fantasticness. The recent harsh flu that has swept through most of SE Qld had most people worrying about how much worse the Swine Flu could be, given that the flu they had was particularly brutal. It wasn’t uncommon to hear about people saying they were having a relapse and/or sick for over 4 weeks with symptoms. It can be utterly debilitating and overtly costly to have to pay for doctors bills, buy medication and have time off work too. When I developed symptoms I took In-Liven 3 times a day, and Berry Radical once a day, and drank a lot of Kefir milk, very diligently, for a whole week. My symptoms intensified over a 3 day period, but I did not ‘go down with the flu’ thankfully. (and I was caring for two children and a breastfeeding a baby too during all this!) After one week I was up and about, nearly normal (if I can ever be described as ‘normal’!), and thanking my lucky stars that I found out about superfoods and probiotics!

I hope you’ll take the opportunity to benefit from investing about $3 a day towards being healthy, for good. But even if you only choose to input some other kinds of superfoods into your diet, you will reap the benefits of restoring your physical energy system. Also, remember the healing power of the Sun. Vitamin D is an essential! Just 10 to 15 minutes each couple of hours will restore your emotional well-being, and kick-start processes within the body that enable essential nutrient absorption.

To your good health! Jannette.

Ding ding! I'm awake now! - The Power of Certified Organic Antioxidants

I've been trying out Berry Radical Antioxidant drink from ONEGroup, and, I've got to say, its living up to all expectations and exceeding others. I thought it might be good to try as I've been looking after a very hungry baby for over 10months now, and I have been feeling like my body has been working harder than it ever has before. I also know that to maintain a healthy body is not just about eating well, but also about removing the unwanted aspects associated with pollution from out atmosphere and our food supplies too.

I have been wonderfully impressed with the level of clarity I seem to get from drinking Berry Radical. It lifts tiredness fog for me almost instantly. I can even give it to my children regularly in a soymilk and banana smoothie! and it is so good to know that they can get this kind of physical 'help' without me having to coax, cajole or trick them at all. They see me put the sachet of chocolate into the smoothie and they cheer because they love the stuff! Yahoo indeed!

Another reason for me starting out on this little venture was that I have had great results from the InLiven probiotic superfood from ONEGroup as well, and I thought that if they could produce a product like InLivensuperfood intake and a regular dose of probiotics in my diet that gave me the natural immune system strength to achieve these wonderful results. so well, then I should give Berry Radical a go too. I am so glad I did, as I feel the difference in my energy levels. Also, I have not been ill for ages, and when I did get the sniffles last Winter it lasted for all of 24hrs, and was able to get it to go without any pharmacueticals at all. True! I even got through a mastitis infection in 48hrs without antibiotics. I firmly believe it was due to the

Berry Radical has a phenomenally high ORAC count ( ORAC units?) which can help you detoxify your systems naturally and easily and simply and gently, all with the taste of real organic chocolate! Oh yeah, I like this!

Chia seeds - more nutritional gold from the South American ancients

I’ve written about Amaranth, and Quinoa (keen-wah), and now here is Chia! Researching new nutritional gold led me to the Chiatah Co in Australia. Growing Chia in Australia and offering a high quality natural, unprocessed ‘superfood’, well, I couldn’t NOT get in touch with them.
So what is Chia and where does it come from? Read on….(courtesy of the Chiatah website www.thechiaco.com.au)

“Chiatah is high quality, naturally grown Australian Chia seed. Chiatah seeds are small, oval shaped black or white seeds and are one of nature's richest sources of plant based Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids. What makes essential fatty acids so important? Your body can't produce them but needs them to maintain optimum health. Not only are they jam packed with essential fatty acids but Chiatah seeds are also rich in a stack of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. They have virtually no sodium or sugar and absolutely no gluten. We describe Chiatah as a wholefood at it's packed with a full spectrum of goodness to benefit your body and mind.

Chia seeds were first used as food as early as 3500 BC and were one of the main dietary components of the Aztecs and the Mayans. Chia seeds were eaten as a grain, drunk as a beverage when mixed with water, ground into flour, included in medicines, pressed for oil and used as a base for face and body paints. The Spanish conquests of America destroyed much of the intensive agricultural production systems that were in place however small pockets of producing regions remained in Central and South America.

A consistent highly quality supply had to be available before Chia could be accepted in the Australian food industry. Growing trials proved exceptionally successful and The Chia Company began large scale production in Australia.”

And as you’ve probably guessed, yep, I put them into muffins so that the children get that all important whack of essential fatty acid input in their diet. They’re both not big on oily fish so it’s one way I can make sure their nutritional needs are being met with ease.

The website for Chiatah has a link for recipes so you can diversify and use chia in many different applications.

I am giving away two sample-paks of chia seeds, one white one black, for someone to try. Write to me at jthtc@yahoo.com.au, with the subject heading ‘Chia Gold’ to enter the draw.
All entries will be taken during February and the winner will be contacted during March, and announced in April’s MiniZine. Best of Luck!

Quinoa - Mother of all Grains

Quinoa, pronounced ‘keen-wah’ or ‘kin-wah’, is a grain similar to Amaranth, which readers know is a special favourite of mine for cooking. Quinoa is high in nutrients and also comes from South American continent like Amaranth. It was a food used in sacred ceremonies by the Incas and was therefore frowned upon by the Christian Spanish Conquistadors, and subsequently suppressed. However it, survived this and is receiving a lot of new interest lately because of it ‘superfood’ status, and has even been considered ‘Kosher’ by Jewish communities if it has been harvested accordingly.

The nutritional value of Quinoa lies in its high protein content and balanced set of essential amino acids, the building blocks of cells. Because of this, it is an excellent food for vegetarians and vegans, and, its gluten free too, so it is wonderful for anyone who is even slightly gluten intolerant, or those with IBS. High in fibre, magnesium and iron, this grain can compliment many recipes and is considered easy to digest. The grains become sticky with heating and I personally use it to thicken vegie gravy or fruit puree for my baby, as well as the all important addition to any muffin recipe you have! :)

Quinoa on its own has an uncommon taste, slightly nutty, with a bitterness that is a result of the saponin coating of the grain itself. This coating is slightly removed in the milling process. Because of the slight bitterness, it is a good balancer in sweet or savoury foods. The flakes are very tasty over muesli or other cereal flakes for breakfast. Buy your Quinoa as a certified organic product to get as much nutrient content as possible. There are many certified organic brands of Quinoa which are available from online organic stores. Just ask by email and they will usually be able to provide you with a sample.

Does it have Amaranth in it?

This is a little joke between my sister and me since my Mother discovered Amaranth and its amazing qualities to promote good health. I have three sisters and we are all interested in natural health and good nutrition, and often tell each other about our newest ‘discovery’ so we can all try it out. I don’t know which one of us told Mum about Amaranth, but it made quite an impression on her and she promptly started using it. Then I received a packet of it too!

My dear Mother has the wonderful ability to mix us all up, and in fairness, having four daughters all living close by and filling her head with each new great product we’ve come across, I excuse her forgetting which one of us said what. (poor woman) So when I received my packet of puffed Amaranth I was told how great it was and that I should use it in all my baking so the children would get its goodness too. And from then on, every time I presented any baked item to Mother Dear I would be asked “Did you put the Amaranth in it???”.

So what is Amaranth and why is it so fantastic?
This ancient grain was grown by the Aztecs, Mayas and Incas and ground to be used as a tasty flour. It has a slightly nutty, spicy flavour and gets very sticky when cooked. It is gluten free! The puffed seeds make a light addition to other flours, as well as heightening the nutritional content of any food it is added too. High in Calcium (approximately 60mg/half cup), low in fat, it contains high quality protein and is rich in Lysine.

Lysine is an essential amino acid (the building blocks of proteins), which means that it is essential to human health but cannot be manufactured by the body. For this reason, lysine must be obtained from food. Lysine is important for proper growth and it plays an essential role in the production of carnitine, a nutrient responsible for converting fatty acids into energy and helping to lower cholesterol. Lysine appears to help the body absorb and conserve calcium and it plays an important role in the formation of collagen, a substance important for bones and connective tissues including skin, tendon, and cartilage. If there is too little lysine in the diet, kidney stones and other health related problems may develop including fatigue, nausea, dizziness, loss of appetite, agitation, bloodshot eyes, slow growth, anemia, and reproductive disorders.

You can use it in any baking as a nutritional addition to pastries, cakes, muffins etc, or added to rice or millet dishes. The grains congeal when cooled, so keep it warm before eating. Sprinkle the puffed seeds over your breakfast cereal and salads too!
This tiny seed was cultivated over 5000 years ago as one of the staple foods for the indigenous peoples of South America, until the arrival of the Spanish, who banned the crop. The tribal people responded by hiding their crops and harvests high in the mountainous areas, and the seed became a valuable source of food.

Luckily, the seed plant was introduced as an ornamental to Europe during the 16th century, and from there it was propagated throughout the world. Especially in India, Amaranth has become an important nutritional supplement and is the main ingredient in the traditional Indian sweet called ‘laddoo’.

In my house I use the puffed grains mainly as an additive to muffins, but find that it goes well with an Alfalfa sandwich too. When my sisters come to visit I usually bake some muffins so we have some thing small and nutritious to eat with our cup of tea, and inevitably now, one particular sister and I have to ask each other “Does it have Amaranth in it?” while pointing decisively at the muffin in question…. :)
